Sorry it’s been a while since I’ve blogged, a lot goin’ on. Home schooling has been really good, we have a great cirriculum to follow and after completing the home school course I learned the best way to teach my kids learning styles and accomodate their needs so they enjoy learning. I realized that I was way to structured for what they needed, I was “doing school at home.” It was really hard for me to give up the control I need from the “structure” and take on the “unschooling” approach. I’ve found a great compromise that allows me the comfort of knowing they are getting the things done that they need to, but on their own time and in they’re own way. We do a little bit of schooling together in the morning which includes: Bible, geography, social studies, reading a book and discussing a few things (Five in a Row), science and art. Then they each have a “list” of things that need to get done by the end of the day, these things include: Math worksheet or drill; Fun math (computer game, dice game etc.); writing (a few different options); spelling (a few options); academic reading (Bible or educational books); free reading (whatever they want); PE (30 minutes of activity that leaves them “hot and sweat”); you choose a subject (science, art, cooking, sewing etc.) So far it’s been working and they get everything done, with very little tears. It’s great!
